Hitachi GST, recently acquired by Western Digital, has announced that it has succeeded in developing sealed hard drives with helium inside. The low-density gas replaces air as the medium through which the drive's read and write heads travel as they move across the radius of a drive's platters. This allows for far denser hard drives and higher speeds with lower power consumption, thanks to the reduced effects of turbulence and drag. The drives should be out in 2013.
