Users of the Nokia Browser bundled with its latest phones might be happy that the app compresses data being sent and received in order to save on carrier charges, but should also be aware that their secure HTTP traffic is decrypted on the way to enable this compression. The fact is not disclosed in the privacy statement or user agreement and affects any data that users enter on a secure site including bank details, usernames and passwords, etc. Nokia says its servers do not store copies of pages that users visit or any data entered, and that appropriate security measures are in place, but this definitely makes Nokia's servers an inviting target for attackers. Compression is not a new browser feature but HTTPS traffic is usually untouched.
